Protected Characteristics

The 9 Protected Characteristics

Did you know that the law says that you can’t be treated less favourably, or put at a disadvantage, because of who you are?  This sort of unfair treatment is known as discrimination & people are not allowed to discriminate against you in certain circumstances simply because of certain things about you.  These things are known as protected characteristics, and there are nine of them.

Age

Age discrimination occurs when you are treated differently because of your age in one of the situations that are covered by the Equality Act.

Disability

Disability discrimination is when you are treated less well or put at a disadvantage for a reason that relates to your disability in one of the situations covered by the Equality Act.

Gender Reassignment

This is when you are treated differently because you are transsexual, in one of the situations covered by the Equality Act.

Marriage & Civil Partnership

The Equality Act says you must not be discriminated against in employment because you are married or in a civil partnership.

Pregnancy & Maternity

Did you know that in certain situations such as at work you can’t be treated unfairly because you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have recently given birth? 

Race

This is when you are treated differently because of your race in one of the situations covered by the Equality Act.

Religion or Belief

This is when you are treated differently because of your religion or belief, or lack of religion or belief, in one of the situations covered by the Equality Act.

Sex

This is when you are treated differently because of your sex, in certain situations covered by the Equality Act 2010.

Sexual Orientation

This is when you are treated differently because of your sexual orientation in one of the situations that are covered by the Equality Act.
